SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) is pleased to present Velocity: rate of change of position, an annual juried members’ exhibition that features innovative and contemporary artworks by emerging and mid-career artists from SAVAC’s membership. Every year, SAVAC invites proposals for new or recently completed artworks through an open call. A jury comprising of artists, curators and SAVAC members select works based on artistic merit and new approaches and ideas on themes surrounding contemporary South Asian identities and experiences.

Velocity: rate of change of position brings together artworks by Arwa Abouon (Montreal), Sharlene Bamboat (London, UK/Toronto), Pritika Chowdhry (Madison, USA), Shireen Kamran (Montreal), Meera Sethi (Toronto) and Meera Margaret Singh (Toronto) that explore the parallels and divergences between our daily routines and the rapidly changing urban environment. The artists engage with fragmented and interconnected narratives from multiple histories to develop works that resonate with the current times.

Velocity: The Rate of Change of Position
A SAVAC Juried Members Exhibition

The South Asian Visual Arts Centre is pleased to announce an open call for Velocity, SAVAC’s Annual Juried Members’ Group Exhibition. SAVAC invites proposals for new and innovative artworks that explore current issues and ideas shaping South Asian identities and experiences.

The exhibition will take place at Function 13: Design, Art & Technology Store & Gallery from 17-25 September 2010.

read more]]> Bare Bones, the bastard stepbrother of a magazine called Le Gun, is a zine based out of London, England. Headed up by Harry Malt, this punk-esque zine provides a platform for contributors, generally limited by the confines of commercial work, to vent through lowbrow art and humor. Recently featured contributors include: Neal Fox, Nial O’Brian, Harry Malt, Tobias Tak, Chris Bianchi and Michael Smith.

Bare Bones has had three shows in London and are crossing the ocean into New York in June.

Combining NXNE’s distinctive community of music fans and industry connections with FITC’s experience with design & technology events, NXNEi explored the arenas of technology, social media, and business. Highlights include presentations by Ze Frank, Zack Lieberman, and Kickstarter’s Perry Chen, as well as panels that covered a wide range of topics such as: Women in Tech and Social Media, The Lost Art of Storytelling, and Consumers Becoming Creators.

Performing Borders by Guillermina Buzio

Performing Borders is an installation consisting of a series of collaborative video performances. The identity process, the limits of the body in relation to other bodies, shifting borders, and blurred identity are key concepts in this work.

Guest Performers: Juana Awad, Ulyses Castellanos, Hazel Meyer, Eugenio Salas, Lisa Visser.

Cymatic Bricolage by Sean Procyk

Visualizing everyday aural experience: Historically, the sound of an object or material was rarely considered by its maker unless it was intended to be acoustic by design. As a result, the contemporary environment is made up of unintentional sounds are byproducts of the built environment. Cymatic Bricolage is an installation that explores this notion of unplanned aural experience by re-contextualizing discarded objects as soniferous.
